Demonstration for 4G Open RAN Deployment in Cambodia

OREX SAI, INC. (Headquarters: Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Representative Director and CEO: Hiroshi Kobayashi, hereinafter "OREX SAI") will begin a demonstration of 4G Open RAN in the Kingdom of Cambodia. The demonstration was selected by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications for the FY 2024 Project for Demonstration of 4G Open RAN Deployment in Cambodia.

In recent years, digital infrastructure is essential for all economic and social activities. In particular, digital infrastructure such as 4G and 5G for mobile communications is being developed in various countries. However, supply chain risks due to changes in the international situation and concerns about ensuring security in cyberspace have become apparent. Concerns have also been raised about the security of digital infrastructure in terms of security, openness, and transparency.

On the other hand, Open RAN is an open wireless access network that enables interconnection with devices and systems from different vendors, instead of the traditional closed mobile network in which only devices from the same vendor can connect to each other. It is expected that the entry of various vendors will make it possible to reduce supply chain risks, build a flexible and highly scalable wireless access network, and optimize prices by activating the base station market. This is expected to contribute to global business development by leveraging the strengths of Japanese telecommunications carriers and vendors.

In this demonstration, 4G Open RAN will be built at a large commercial facility in Cambodia to verify the availability of voice and data communications. In addition, AI solutions for commercial facilities provided by NTT DATA Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., will be tested to verify the use cases that can be realized by stable mobile networks. By displaying the usefulness of Open RAN in Cambodia through these demonstration experiments, OREX will encourage the introduction of OREX Packages, contribute to the flexible and rapid expansion of the mobile area in Cambodia and lead to the enlargement of the global business of OREX SAI and its partners.

In addition to this demonstration, a workshop on Open RAN and other topics will be held at the Cambodia Academy of Digital Technology (CADT) on October 28, 2024 (local time) with the aim of fostering local human resources.
